Course Description
Welcome to Academic Writing. This class is designed to accomplish the following:
1) Write a 1500-word research
essay.
2) Write direct and indirect quotations.
3) Paraphrase and summarize.
4) Use APA style to cite sources
and compile reference lists.
Course Assessment and Grading Criteria
50% A 1500-word research essay, which should
include a detailed map or outline, and at least seven APA formatted in-text
citation markers together with their corresponding correctly formatted
references.
30% A portfolio of all the work that you downloaded
and did in class or finished for homework.
10% A
mid-term in-class essay
10% A
final in-class essay
Attendance
Policy
You are expected to attend ALL classes. Your
absences may affect your final grade.
Two or
three late arrivals count as one absence. If you are very late or wilfully
late, you will be considered absent. There is a grade ceiling policy depending
on the absences you have from class.

Week 14 - LAST LESSON
Dear students,
Today you should hand in your final paper in printed form, and show me the receipt of your submission to the university database. After you have all handed in your final paper, you will have a final exam. This test will be worth ten points.
You will have twenty minutes to summarize the information in the chart below in 150 words or more. You may not use a dictionary (but you will need to use your phone to access the blog post). Your summary will be graded using the following four criteria: task completion, cohesive devices, grammar, vocabulary.

This is the deadline for your first draft, so please hand this in at the beginning of the lesson.
Today you will continue to write your academic paper. Please allow me to see your work and mark you off after completing the various stages: map/outline, thesis statement, bibliography, introduction, first draft, edits and rewrites, final draft.
If you want to bring your computer to class, please do; This might save you some time.
Spelling and grammar checker:In Microsoft Word, the spelling and grammar checker is under "Tools" on your menu bar. There is also a "Thesaurus" under "Tools", too.
Header:There are two ways to put a header on your paper. One is to manually do it after you have finished writing your paper. The other way is to access it under "View", which is also on the menu bar. In the navigation bar for "Header and Footer", you should click on the "Different First Page" checkbox.
The first page of you header should look like this:

All the other pages in your paper should look like this:

Week 10
Dear students,
Today I would like to check your bibliographies. Your references don't necessarily need to be in APA format, but if they are, I can check them for you. Remember to cite trusted reliable sources rather than anything you just happen to find on the Internet; Poor sources are more likely to weaken your argument than strengthen it. In this respect, you should try to avoid writing "(n.d.)" throughout your text.
After I have checked your bibliographies, you will do a short exercise about cohesion. After that you will continue to write and edit your final paper.

Week 9
Dear students,
Today you will look at APA formatting in more detail.
First of all, in a previous lesson, I said that the headers should be bold, 18 point and 16 point. This is only true for a specific college I teach at - it is not APA, so please ignore what I said! Everything should be 12 point Times New Roman. Secondly, "Works Cited" should be labelled "References". I am sorry for the confusion.
Here is my sample essay written to conform with APA guidelines:

Week 8
Dear students,
Today you will take your mid-term test. While you are doing the test, your teacher would like to check your portfolio, so please make sure to bring it to class. It should include your:
1) essay about retirement
2) group comparison essay
3) in-text citation matching exercise
4) works cited matching exercise
5) group final paper (typed)
6) map or outline of your final paper
Your portfolio is worth 30 points and you should hand it in today. Late portfolios will score a maximum of only 20 points.
Today's test is worth 10 points. You will have forty minutes. You should write a minimum of 250 words.
Test question:
More and more people are eating imported food these days. What are the reasons for this, and what can be done to promote local produce?
You will not be allowed dictionaries or cell phones, and there is no need to write references. You should, however, prepare to answer the question in advance.

Today you will work in groups of four or five. You should choose a topic to write about, narrow the focus, draw a detailed map, do your reseach, and then write your part of the essay. A good thesis should be original, interesting, researched, and include critical thinking. Your group essay should be over 250 words long per person (over 1000 words) and include at least five references. Therefore your essay will have at least five APA formatted in-text citation markers together with their matching full APA formatted references in the Works Cited. All of your references should support and strengthen your thesis. A good reference is the opinion of an expert. A bad reference is something arbritary that you found on the Internet. Wikipedia is fine for this class, but the original source of the Wikipedia article (the references at the bottom of the page) may be better.
For homework, please type your part of the essay in APA format. You should use Times New Roman font. Your text should be 12-point and fully justified. Your references should be hanging indent, left justified. Everything should be double spaced.
It should look something like the file below:
